Removals FAQs
Got questions about moving with House Removals North London? You’re in the right place. These removals FAQs cover moving day questions, packing and access info, payment and receipts, and what we can and can’t move. If you can’t find what you need, our team is happy to help by phone or email.
Booking and availability
How soon can I book movers?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for Fridays, month-end, and school holidays. Short-notice slots are sometimes available and we can often dispatch a team at short notice, subject to schedule and location. Share your dates and addresses via our Get a Quote form and we’ll confirm availability.
How long will my move take?
Duration depends on the size of your property, number of boxes, access, and travel time. A studio with good access may take a few hours; larger homes take longer and may need multiple vans. Once we review your inventory and access details, we’ll provide a realistic time estimate. See our How It Works page for the typical timeline.
Can I change or cancel my booking?
Yes. Please let us know as soon as possible. Changes are subject to availability. Cancellation terms are explained in your booking confirmation. If your dates are uncertain, tell us when enquiring and we’ll advise the most flexible options.
Preparation and packing
How to prepare for moving day?
- Declutter and separate items you don’t want moved.
- Pack room by room, label boxes clearly, and keep essentials aside.
- Empty, defrost, and dry your fridge/freezer at least 24 hours before.
- Reserve parking and clear access routes.
- Photograph furniture and note pre-existing marks for your records.
For a step-by-step plan, use our Moving House Checklist and Packing Guide.
Do you provide packing services and materials?
Yes. We offer full or partial packing services and can supply high-quality packing materials including boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper. If you prefer to self-pack, we can deliver materials ahead of move day.
Do movers dismantle furniture?
We can dismantle and reassemble standard items such as beds, wardrobes with simple fixings, and tables, if requested in advance. Please flag anything complex or bespoke, as specialist tools or extra time may be required. Our team also offers furniture assembly for new purchases and flat-pack items.
Do you provide wardrobe boxes?
Yes. We can provide rail wardrobe cartons to keep hanging clothes crease-free. Let us know quantities when you book so we bring the right number on the day.
Can movers disconnect appliances?
We can disconnect simple plug-in appliances. We do not undertake gas, hard-wired electrical, or plumbing disconnections. Please arrange a qualified professional for gas cookers, integrated appliances, and washing machine plumbing. Our team will then safely move the item once it’s disconnected.
What happens if it rains?
We work in all normal weather conditions. We’ll protect your belongings with covers and take extra care with floor protection and handling. In severe weather that poses safety risks, we’ll discuss practical options with you.
Should I empty drawers and cupboards?
- Drawers: Light clothing is usually fine to stay in sturdy furniture; heavy or fragile items should be boxed.
- Cupboards: Please empty and pack contents.
- Filing cabinets: Lockable units may be moved with light files inside if safe to lift; otherwise, please empty.
Can you help with packing fragile items?
Absolutely. We use appropriate wrapping and double-walled cartons for glass, china, art, and electronics. For high-value or delicate items, please mention them when requesting a quote; we’ll plan suitable protection and handling.
Access and parking
What access is required for the van?
Please ensure safe parking close to your entrance so we can load efficiently. Typical needs include:
- A legal space suitable for a Luton or long-wheelbase van
- Clear access routes, hallways, and stairs
- Lift access permissions (if applicable)
If you’re unsure, our Parking and Access guide explains options, including suspension requests and permits.
Do I need to arrange parking permits?
If your street requires a permit, suspension, or pay-and-display, please arrange it in advance. In many boroughs, residents can request a temporary bay suspension. If you need help identifying the right permit, contact your local council or ask us for guidance.
What if there’s no lift or limited access?
We can still complete the move, but it may take longer and may require more crew members. Please tell us about stairs, tight turns, narrow doors, or low ceilings when you request a quote so we can plan accordingly.
Can you move from or to storage?
Yes. We offer collection and delivery to most storage facilities and can also arrange temporary storage if you need an interim solution between properties.
What we can and can’t move
What items are restricted or cannot be moved?
For safety and legal reasons, we cannot move:
- Gas cylinders, fuel, or other flammables
- Paints, solvents, and chemicals
- Live animals or plants in poor condition
- Illegal items or anything that breaches regulations
- Extremely high-value items without prior notification
If in doubt, ask us in advance and we’ll advise alternatives or special arrangements.
Do you move pianos, antiques, and artwork?
Yes, with prior notice. We provide specialist piano removals and antique removals using protective materials, additional manpower, and appropriate equipment. For large or delicate pieces, photos and measurements help us plan.
Do you move single items or same-day requests?
We do. Our single-item moves and man and van options suit smaller loads and urgent deliveries. Same-day assistance may be possible depending on schedule—contact us to check.
On the day
What time will the team arrive?
We provide an arrival window and keep you updated on the day. Traffic, access, and previous jobs can affect timings, but we’ll communicate promptly if anything changes.
Do I need to be present?
It’s best if you or a nominated representative is present to provide access, confirm inventory, and approve the final placement of items at the new address. If that’s not possible, let us know and we’ll discuss alternatives.
How will my belongings be protected?
We use floor runners, moving blankets, mattress and sofa covers, and appropriate strapping in the vehicle. Fragile items are wrapped and boxed as needed. We load and secure items to minimise movement in transit.
Can you dismantle and reassemble on the day?
Yes, if included in your booking. Please flag the items beforehand. For bespoke or complex furniture, we may recommend a pre-move survey to confirm time and tools.
Do you label and place boxes in rooms?
We’ll follow your labels and room plans to place boxes and furniture where you want them. Clear labels on all sides of boxes help speed up unloading and reduce re-handling.
What if keys are delayed?
It’s common for key release to run late on completion day. Keep us updated and we’ll work with you within the agreed schedule. Waiting time policies are outlined in your quote; if extended waiting is needed, we’ll discuss options.
Insurance and protection
Are my goods insured during the move?
We carry Goods in Transit cover and Public Liability cover appropriate for removals work. Limits and terms are provided with your quote. For full details of inclusions and exclusions, please see our Insurance page.
What isn’t covered?
Typical exclusions may include owner-packed fragile items, pre-existing damage, and items restricted by policy terms. We’ll explain your options, including any need for additional cover, before the move.
Do you provide risk assessments or method statements?
Yes, where required (e.g., for commercial moves or complex access). Tell us about site requirements and we’ll provide the necessary documentation.
Payments, quotes, and paperwork
How do I get a quote?
Use our quick Get a Quote form to share inventory, addresses, dates, photos, and any access notes. For larger moves, we may suggest a video or site survey to confirm details.
Is the quote fixed or estimated?
We provide a clear scope based on the information you share. If the inventory, access, or timings change, the price may need adjustment. We’ll always discuss any changes with you before proceeding.
When do I pay for the move?
Payment terms will be stated in your booking confirmation. Typically, payment is due prior to or on the day of service, depending on the service type. We accept standard payment methods and will confirm options when you book.
Do you provide receipts and invoices?
Yes. We’ll email a VAT or itemised invoice/receipt as required once payment is processed. If you need your company details added for business moves, please provide them at the time of booking.
Can I reduce costs by being flexible?
Flexibility on dates, allowing shared loads for longer distances, and completing some packing yourself can help. Our Pricing page explains what affects cost and when a survey is recommended.
Packing and materials
How many boxes will I need?
As a rough guide, a studio may use 15–25 boxes, a 1–2 bed flat 25–40, and larger homes more. Needs vary by belongings and packing style. We can advise based on your inventory and supply materials in advance.
How should I pack fragile items?
Use double-walled boxes, plenty of padding, and avoid overfilling. Plates should be packed vertically, glasses individually wrapped, and electronics in original boxes where possible. Our team can handle all fragile packing if you prefer a professional finish.
Can you unpack at the new home?
Yes. Our unpacking services range from surface-only to full put-away. Tell us your preference and we’ll include it in your quote.
Specialty moves and extras
Do you handle office and commercial moves?
We do. Our office removals team plans out-of-hours moves, IT equipment handling, and building access coordination. Share your floor plans and any security requirements for an accurate plan.
Do you provide long-distance removals?
Yes. We cover moves across the UK and can coordinate staged load/unload, overnight runs, and multi-drop deliveries. See long-distance removals for more information.
Can you move students or small flats?
Absolutely. Our student removals and flat removals services are streamlined for smaller loads, shared housing, and tight access.
After the move
Will you take away packing materials?
On request, we can collect reusable boxes and remove used materials for recycling, subject to condition and availability. Please ask at booking so we can plan a suitable collection.
What if I notice damage?
Please inform us as soon as possible with photos and details. We’ll review promptly and explain next steps in line with our insurance and service terms.
Can you help with furniture positioning and assembly?
Yes. Time permitting within your booking, we’ll position furniture and reassemble agreed items. If you anticipate extensive rearranging, let us know so we can allocate sufficient time.
